Elite Victoria Memorial

The Victoria Memorial was built to commemorate the peak of the British Empire in India. The Victoria Memorial, conceived by Lord Curzon, represents the architectural climax of Kolkata city. Lord Curzon, the then Viceroy specified its classical style but the actual plan of Victoria Memorial was laid down by the well-known architect, Sir William Emerson.

The Victoria Memorial blends the best of the British and Mughal architecture. The Victoria Memorial hall was built with white Makrana marbles. The Prince of Wales laid the foundation stone of Victoria Memorial in 1906 and it was inaugurated in 1921 in memory of Queen Victoria. The Victoria Memorial is 338 by 228 feet and a height of 184 feet. Today the Victoria Memorial Hall is a museum having an assortment of Victoria memorabilia, British Raj paintings and other displays. As night descends on Calcutta, the Victoria Memorial Hall is illuminated, giving it a fairy tale look.

It is interesting to note that the Victoria Memorial was built without British government funds. The money required for the construction of the stately building, surrounded by beautiful gardens over 64 acres and costing more than 10 million was contributed by British Indian states and individuals who wanted favours with the British government. At the top of the Victoria Memorial is a sixteen foot tall bronze statue of victory, mounted on ball bearings. It rotates with wind. At present the Victoria Memorial has notable collection of weapons, sculptors, paintings, maps, coins, stamps, artefacts’, textiles etc. The Royal gallery in Victoria Memorial has portraits of the Queen and Prince Albert. There are numerous paintings, illustrating events from Victoria's life.

Another remarkable peace in Victoria Memorial is a painting by the Russian artist Vasseli Verestchagin, portraying the state entry of the Prince of Wales in Jaipur in the year 1876. In the post independence period a new addition was made to the Victoria Memorial. It was the addition of the National leaders' gallery with the portraits and relics of the freedom fighters.

House and office complex by J mayer H features monochrome facades and false shadows

The four buildings that make up the Sonnenhof complex range in height from five to seven storeys, and are clustered around a central courtyard.
All four buildings feature faceted monochrome facades. Skewed pentagonal and square windows are outlined by grey aluminium paneling, contrasting the stark white plasterwork.

In homage to this detailing, J Mayer H chose to paint different areas of the courtyard black and white, creating the illusion that dark shadows are cast onto the ground.
Wedge-shaped planters with integrated benches contribute to this effect.

The Sonnenhof complex is located in Jena, a town in the Saale river valley in eastern Germany.

‘Gandhi Smarak Sangrahalaya’ - A Reformation of Contemporary Architecture

Charles Correa started blending of the old architecture with the modern one. He designed the new building of museum in 1964 of ‘Gandhi Smarak Sangrahalaya’, keeping in mind Gandhiji’s residence ‘Hridaykunj’ and other buildings. After the death of Louis Kahn, the new building in IIM campus like Ravi Mathai Centre etc have been designed by Anant Raje by blending the new style and the old one. He has also designed the beautiful building of MICA.

Among the contemporary architectures, our attention is drawn to Balkrishna Doshi’s office studio (1981) and Mahatma Gandhi Labour Institute designed by him. Its semicircular ceiling and elevation look impressive at the first sight. Mandela Architects has designed the building of Centre for Environment Education (CEE-1988) conducive to environment, preserving the trees intact. Recently, extension of IIM building is designed by Bimal Patel.

Amdavad-ni-Gufa (1992) is a creation of well known painter M.F. Hussain and architect Padmashri Balkrishna Doshi collaboratively. It is an underground ferrocement structure with optimally structured roof shells in china mosaic protruding over ground.

A 200 feet high sky scrapper, revolving Patang Hotel is a phenomenal and milestone building of Ahmedabad. It is a pride of Ashram Road. Its architect Hasmukh Patel has designed other remarkable buildings like Reserve Bank at the end of Gandhi Bridge, St.Xaviers’ Loyola High School, Dena Bank on Ashram Road and High Court on S.G. Highway.

The architectural structure of Entrepreneurship Development Institute (EDI-1992) designed by Bimal Patel fetched Agakhan Award. Bimal Patel is actively engaged in the Riverfront Development Project.

The structures of Tagore Hall and Premabhai Hall draw our attention for their unique architectural design. The wall column outside the building appears unique. The institutional architecture of Prathama Blood Centre and Ahmedabad Management Association (AMA-1991) is modern. Prathama Blood Centre is designed by architech Gurjit Singh.Gujarat Univercity Convention Centre is the recently developed latest architecture of the city.

The architecture of Torrent Research Centre (TRC) is wonderful as it gives feeling of winter in summer. Its special system is developed for cooling by architects-Nimesh Patel and Parul Zaveri. Again, Nirma University Campus is very different in architecture, designed by Bakul Amin.

The newly constructed pavilions of Science City are unique and they have novel design by architect Rajeev Kathapalia. The I-max 3-D theatre is the first of its kind in India. It gives an appearance of a step well. There are steps leading to basement, and there is a large screen to project films.

The symbolic figures carved on Vinod Kinariwala’s memorial are remarkable. The memorial erected to commemorate Maha Gujarat movement- Shahid Smarak is a fine piece of architecture. Morarji Desai’s Samadhi ‘Abhayghat’ reminds visitors of Rajghat at Delhi.

Madras Government House-Indian Reformation in British Style

3D Power & Historians regard the year 1757 as the starting point of the British Empire in India, even though large parts of the country remained under the rule of Indian princes. It took nearly another hundred years for the East India Company and the British government to extend British rule to northern and western India. The British ruled over the Indians for nearly two centuries, when finally in 1947, India gained independence and became a sovereign state.

During these years, the British introduced innumerous reforms in India. They developed roads, introduced better means of communication, built great cities and buildings to facilitate their smooth governance over the large Indian sub-continent. Renowned architects of the likes of Lutyens, Edward Frere, Le Corbusier, etc. laid layout plans for some modern Indian cities and designed exquisite buildings during this period. These buildings and monuments still stand high glorifying the excellence of these icons of modern architecture.

When the British government had consolidated its position in India, it decided to redefine its administration. A whole new Government architecture was developed. During the initial phase, the East India Company's main interest in India was to generate internal revenue for promoting its trade but under the British government, India developed as a colony and British dominion.
The government developed a transport network to help its economic, military, and administrative operations. Railway building in India was done for both military and economic reasons. Government buildings were erected and new cities developed. The foundation stone for British architecture was laid down.

In the subsequent pages to follow, a series of information has been provided regarding some exquisite examples of British architecture in India and also the life of some ingenious architects who contributed to it. One of the work has been recognized as The Madras Government House.
The Madras Government House: The vestiges of the British architecture can be traced to the times when the East India Company had a firm hold over a large part of the Indian mainland. The Madras Government House represents the architecture trends of the period. Unlike its French equivalent at Pondicherry, Government House Triplicane, Madras (now Chennai) is typical except for its later Banqueting Hall.

The Madras Government House was adapted for Lord Clive in the 1790s from an earlier one, after the pattern set at Pondicherry by the residence built for Dupleix some fifty years earlier. There superimposed arcaded loggias before clerestory-lit major spaces were articulated with Doric and Ionic Orders in the Academic Classical manner of early 18th-century France.
At Triplicane, however, much lighter colonnaded verandahs, elegant but quite uncanonical in their intercolumniations, were erected around much of the side as well as the front. The whole complex is dominated by the Doric Banqueting Hall, which, even in its original form without the lower arcading -but not least in the application of column to wall - was as remote from its ostensible model, the Parthenon, as the main house is from Academic Classical principle.

5 Trends Shaping Future Of Architecture

What does the future of the architecture industry hold? We asked experts from some of the world’s most innovative companies to look into their crystal balls and divine the ways that the built environment will evolve over the next five years. Largely optimistic, these trends indicate a rosy future for the structures that surround us every day. Architects predict that these buildings won't be as flashy, but they'll be far more useful on an everyday basis— (the starchitect-designed roof leak is so last century). And they may be built of a material you haven't even heard of yet.
Here are some of the ways that architects expect the field will change in the near future:

Starchitecture will dim.
Steve McConnell, managing partner at NBBJ, says architectural design is moving from paying "a lot of attention to the artifact—the physical thing—to a greater emphasis of the opportunity represented when people gather." He describes this way of working with clients as "almost in a realm of strategic partnering with businesses."
For instance, for the firm’s Tencent campus, where the client wanted to encourage spontaneous run-ins between employees, NBBJ mapped the pathways that would be taken throughout the building by thousands of employees, designing the building to maximize intersections between those paths.
Julian Weyer, partner at the Denmark-based C.F. Møller Architects, agrees that clients are more interested in the thinking behind design, rather than just chasing after starchitecture. "There’s a counter trend which focuses more on meaning," he explains. "Why do we even construct anything? That can be more fruitful—what do we actually need, rather than who’s going to design it."

Architecture will be more collaborative.
As clients become more interested in thinking outside the physical box of the building, architects will need to collaborate with more experts from different fields—like NBBJ's in-house brain scientist. "We are already seeing today broad design teams that include social anthropologists and environmental scientists who are creating nurturing, sustainable and meaningful environments," says Jay Brotman of Svigals + Partners, a New Haven, Connecticut-based firm. "In the future we will see policy makers joining these teams which will [create] a more holistic perspective of the built environment and effect broader change."

Chinese architecture will be more subtle.
Known for some of the tallest and most unusual-looking architecture in the world, China has proven to be a fertile market for architecture in recent years. " You could build almost anything, and it would be commercially viable," Steve McConnell of NBBJ says. Now, he sees the market trending toward more sophisticated design as the country urbanizes and the real estate industry gets stronger.

"We’re seeing another wave of market maturity that’s going to see more mature design work and understanding of [a building’s] performance," he says. He sees comments by Chinese leadership, such as the president’s recent tirade against "weird architecture" like the Rem Koolhaas-designed CCTV headquarters) as a sign that going forward, Chinese projects will face greater scrutiny over their utility, rather than their flashy looks.

How The Designer Behind Aaron Schock's Office Caught The Attention Of Capitol Hill

It's not easy to get hold of Annie Brahler, the designer behind what might be the most famous office on Capitol Hill. The founder of Euro Trash, a design and import company that specializes in "the time-worn imperfections of the past," Brahler is a busy woman. When we first spoke by phone this week, she was caught in a snow storm, driving home from work. During our second conversation, she was in the middle of an install, often politely excusing herself to speak with a colleague or an electrician who was on site.

3D Power thinks that the onslaught of press attention surrounding Brahler's so-called "Downton Abbey" re-design of Rep. Aaron Schock's (R-Ill.) office has not slowed her down in the least.
Brahler's work snared the political world's interest this week when The Washington Post published a widely discussed story on Schock's office, located in the House of Representatives' Rayburn Office Building. One of the congressman's employees told the Post that the unusual decor had been inspired by the well-known British period drama. But Brahler is quick to point out that "Downton Abbey" was not the model for her design. True, her company is known for its vintage aesthetic, but Brahler is more likely to raid the dusty corners of a flea market than the shelves of a pricey antique dealer. The stuffy Crawleys would probably not approve.

Of course, we at 3D Power do believe that Brahler wasn't designing for an aristocratic family, but rather for one of the youngest Republican congressmen, an up-and-coming lawmaker who understands the power of Instagram and can recite the immortal words of Taylor Swift. Brahler had designed Schock's previous office as well, and knew that only an office drenched in red, accented by bits of gold and white, would do.

Peek at the below photographs of Schock's recently completed office and you'll see the ornate frames that line the walls, paired with carefully arranged pheasant feathers and presidential portraits. A vintage glass table rests atop two golden eagles with their wings spread. A bust of Lincoln lingers in a corner. The details -- from leather-bound books to precariously stacked teacups to retro coins -- were collected over several months' planning, but installed in just four days.
