House and office complex by J mayer H features monochrome facades and false shadows

The four buildings that make up the Sonnenhof complex range in height from five to seven storeys, and are clustered around a central courtyard.
All four buildings feature faceted monochrome facades. Skewed pentagonal and square windows are outlined by grey aluminium paneling, contrasting the stark white plasterwork.

In homage to this detailing, J Mayer H chose to paint different areas of the courtyard black and white, creating the illusion that dark shadows are cast onto the ground.
Wedge-shaped planters with integrated benches contribute to this effect.

The Sonnenhof complex is located in Jena, a town in the Saale river valley in eastern Germany.

‘Gandhi Smarak Sangrahalaya’ - A Reformation of Contemporary Architecture

Charles Correa started blending of the old architecture with the modern one. He designed the new building of museum in 1964 of ‘Gandhi Smarak Sangrahalaya’, keeping in mind Gandhiji’s residence ‘Hridaykunj’ and other buildings. After the death of Louis Kahn, the new building in IIM campus like Ravi Mathai Centre etc have been designed by Anant Raje by blending the new style and the old one. He has also designed the beautiful building of MICA.

Among the contemporary architectures, our attention is drawn to Balkrishna Doshi’s office studio (1981) and Mahatma Gandhi Labour Institute designed by him. Its semicircular ceiling and elevation look impressive at the first sight. Mandela Architects has designed the building of Centre for Environment Education (CEE-1988) conducive to environment, preserving the trees intact. Recently, extension of IIM building is designed by Bimal Patel.

Amdavad-ni-Gufa (1992) is a creation of well known painter M.F. Hussain and architect Padmashri Balkrishna Doshi collaboratively. It is an underground ferrocement structure with optimally structured roof shells in china mosaic protruding over ground.

A 200 feet high sky scrapper, revolving Patang Hotel is a phenomenal and milestone building of Ahmedabad. It is a pride of Ashram Road. Its architect Hasmukh Patel has designed other remarkable buildings like Reserve Bank at the end of Gandhi Bridge, St.Xaviers’ Loyola High School, Dena Bank on Ashram Road and High Court on S.G. Highway.

The architectural structure of Entrepreneurship Development Institute (EDI-1992) designed by Bimal Patel fetched Agakhan Award. Bimal Patel is actively engaged in the Riverfront Development Project.

The structures of Tagore Hall and Premabhai Hall draw our attention for their unique architectural design. The wall column outside the building appears unique. The institutional architecture of Prathama Blood Centre and Ahmedabad Management Association (AMA-1991) is modern. Prathama Blood Centre is designed by architech Gurjit Singh.Gujarat Univercity Convention Centre is the recently developed latest architecture of the city.

The architecture of Torrent Research Centre (TRC) is wonderful as it gives feeling of winter in summer. Its special system is developed for cooling by architects-Nimesh Patel and Parul Zaveri. Again, Nirma University Campus is very different in architecture, designed by Bakul Amin.

The newly constructed pavilions of Science City are unique and they have novel design by architect Rajeev Kathapalia. The I-max 3-D theatre is the first of its kind in India. It gives an appearance of a step well. There are steps leading to basement, and there is a large screen to project films.

The symbolic figures carved on Vinod Kinariwala’s memorial are remarkable. The memorial erected to commemorate Maha Gujarat movement- Shahid Smarak is a fine piece of architecture. Morarji Desai’s Samadhi ‘Abhayghat’ reminds visitors of Rajghat at Delhi.

5 Trends Shaping Future Of Architecture

What does the future of the architecture industry hold? We asked experts from some of the world’s most innovative companies to look into their crystal balls and divine the ways that the built environment will evolve over the next five years. Largely optimistic, these trends indicate a rosy future for the structures that surround us every day. Architects predict that these buildings won't be as flashy, but they'll be far more useful on an everyday basis— (the starchitect-designed roof leak is so last century). And they may be built of a material you haven't even heard of yet.
Here are some of the ways that architects expect the field will change in the near future:

Starchitecture will dim.
Steve McConnell, managing partner at NBBJ, says architectural design is moving from paying "a lot of attention to the artifact—the physical thing—to a greater emphasis of the opportunity represented when people gather." He describes this way of working with clients as "almost in a realm of strategic partnering with businesses."
For instance, for the firm’s Tencent campus, where the client wanted to encourage spontaneous run-ins between employees, NBBJ mapped the pathways that would be taken throughout the building by thousands of employees, designing the building to maximize intersections between those paths.
Julian Weyer, partner at the Denmark-based C.F. Møller Architects, agrees that clients are more interested in the thinking behind design, rather than just chasing after starchitecture. "There’s a counter trend which focuses more on meaning," he explains. "Why do we even construct anything? That can be more fruitful—what do we actually need, rather than who’s going to design it."

Architecture will be more collaborative.
As clients become more interested in thinking outside the physical box of the building, architects will need to collaborate with more experts from different fields—like NBBJ's in-house brain scientist. "We are already seeing today broad design teams that include social anthropologists and environmental scientists who are creating nurturing, sustainable and meaningful environments," says Jay Brotman of Svigals + Partners, a New Haven, Connecticut-based firm. "In the future we will see policy makers joining these teams which will [create] a more holistic perspective of the built environment and effect broader change."

Chinese architecture will be more subtle.
Known for some of the tallest and most unusual-looking architecture in the world, China has proven to be a fertile market for architecture in recent years. " You could build almost anything, and it would be commercially viable," Steve McConnell of NBBJ says. Now, he sees the market trending toward more sophisticated design as the country urbanizes and the real estate industry gets stronger.

"We’re seeing another wave of market maturity that’s going to see more mature design work and understanding of [a building’s] performance," he says. He sees comments by Chinese leadership, such as the president’s recent tirade against "weird architecture" like the Rem Koolhaas-designed CCTV headquarters) as a sign that going forward, Chinese projects will face greater scrutiny over their utility, rather than their flashy looks.
